Extension: 74 acres
As of the 2010 vintage, Pojer & Sandri can be conisdered an "estate bottled" winery. We currently farm all the vineyards used to source fruit for our broad range of Trentino-area wines. Most of the vineyards are owned by Pojer & Sandri, with a small percentage being under long-term contract, but farmed by us.
We have reached a major goal in doing so, as we continue to follow our philosophy of "quality," starting from the ground up. We have great respect for nature, the seasons, the terroir and the tradition of wise, old farmers.
Since 2009 we're employing a new regimen in pruning our vineyards. This enhancement is fostered by famed Friulani viticulturists Marco Simonit and Pierpaolo Sirch, with the collaboration of University of Milan Professor Attilio Scienza. Their techniques feature "soft pruning," a method said to extend the life of the vines along with protecting the plants from various diseases. First and foremost, however, is the quality of the grapes and their methods allow us to obtain good fruit. (Some estates employing Simonit & Sirch's services include Gaja, Venica & Venica, Schiopetto, Col d'Orcia, Bellavista, San Felice and Planeta, amongst others.)
Production: 250.000 bottles
The names of Pojer & Sandri have long been viewed as pioneers in the Italian wine industry.
Since we started in 1975, we focused on the research and innovation in elevating the quality of our table wines, sparkling wines, dessert wines and distilled spirits.
Pojer e Sandri was the first in Italy to produce Chardonnay (1979) and the winery was the first to produce Sauvignon Blanc in the Trentino region.
Not content to rest on their laurels, Pojer e Sandri began exploring the realm of bottle-fermented sparkling wine. In 1978, the initial experimental batches were vinified and some years later, the first commercial bubbly, our Cuvée ’83 – ’84, came to market. This was made from a stainless steel-fermented base wine which was then barrel aged. The wine was bone dry, as the sparkling wine is offered "pas dose" (without a sweetening dosage).
In 1980, Pojer e Sandri began employing French oak cooperage for the maturation of some innovative blended wines. As most wines in the region were single varietal bottlings, we began making our two "Faye" (remember, we're situated in the village of Faedo) wines. The white is a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco, the red a unique mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Lagrein. Later we added the "Besler" blends, the "Biank" (Pinot Bianco, Riesling Renano, Sauvignon, Incrocio Manzoni and Kerner) and the "Ross" (comprised of Pinot Nero, the Austrian variety called Zweigelt, Franconia, Negrara Trentina and the equally unknown Gropello della Val di Non).
Proprietor: Mario Pojer , Fiorentino Sandri
Winemaker: Mario Pojer
Pojer & Sandri is a company dates to 1975, when young Fiorentino Sandri inherited a parcel of vineyards at the alpine village of Faedo and with his winemaker friend Mario Pojer who had just received his diploma from the San Michele Agricultural Institute formed a partnership which has been very, pardon the pun, “fruitful” and is now in its fourth decade.
Their goal in this untested viticultural area between the Adige river and Cembra Valley was simple, but ambitious: to prove that with care and skill, they could, contrary to popularly-held beliefs, demonstrate the Faedo area (and environs) was capable of producing world-class wines.
